We Condemn The Kidnapping Of Juja Mp, George Koimburi

Juja MP George Koimburi was kidnapped yesterday by unknown individuals. Koimburi was taken on the afternoon of Sunday, May 25, during a church sermon in full glare of the congregation, who watched him get hustled into a Subaru vehicle. Today, it has been reported that he was found dumped at the Jacaranda Coffee Plantation in the Kibichoi area of Ruirua Coffee Farm in Kiambu County.

The Atheists In Kenya Society strongly condemns the kidnapping of the Juja legislator. We ask the DPP to conduct thorough investigations into this matter, and the findings be made public.

Article 29 of the Constitution of Kenya guarantees the right to personal liberty. It states that “every person has the right to freedom and security of the person,” which includes the right not to be “deprived of freedom arbitrarily or without just cause.”

Earlier this month, Kenya’s President William Ruto said that all those abducted in the wake of anti-government protests in June 2024 had been “returned to their families” and promised it would not happen again. It was one of the clearest admissions by the president that security forces had engaged in widespread kidnappings and illegal detentions of Kenyans.

It is clear to us that the Kenya Kwanza Government has in place an organized abduction squad linked to the Kenyan security forces, targeting individuals who criticize the government.

That squad, in our view, has yet to be disbanded.

Members of Parliament ought to contemplate the impeachment of President Ruto due to the current incidents of kidnappings and abductions.
