The Atheists In Kenya Society (AIK) wishes to express its strong support for the Government’s ongoing efforts to regulate churches and religious institutions in Kenya.Chu rches are not above regulation.
We strongly encourage Churches to refrain from misleading the Kenyan populace. Should the Bill be enacted, it would not infringe upon religious freedom, contrary to the claims made by certain religious groups.
It is widely recognized that the absence of regulation for religious organisations has resulted in various forms of exploitation targeting vulnerable Kenyans.
Religion plays a significant role in the lives of many Kenyans, but it is equally important that religious organisations operate within a framework that ensures accountability, transparency, and respect for the rights of all citizens. In recent years, we have witnessed disturbing cases of exploitation, financial impropriety, and harmful practices carried out under the guise of faith. These incidents highlight the urgent need for effective oversight.
We believe that regulations will:
- Protect vulnerable citizens from manipulation, abuse, and exploitation.
- Ensure financial accountability by requiring churches to maintain proper records and submit to audits.
- Promote social harmony by curbing extremist teachings and practices that threaten national unity.
- Safeguard constitutional rights by ensuring that religious freedom is exercised responsibly and does not infringe on the rights of others.
The Atheists In Kenya Society affirms that freedom of religion, guaranteed under Article 32 of the Constitution, must coexist with the responsibility to protect the public interest. Regulation is not an attack on faith—it is a safeguard for our democracy, our economy, and our social fabric.
Kenya deserves a society where faith is practiced with integrity and where citizens are shielded from exploitation in the name of religion.
