Promoting freedom of belief since 2016

We began as a bunch of atheists and free-thinkers. Today, we’re a national organisation that devotes much of it’s time to campaigning and lobbying on behalf of the non-religious as well as for freedom of religion, belief, speech, thought, and expression more generally.

2014

Humble beginnings

We started convening informally and conducting meetings in hotels located in Nairobi. The majority of those who attended identified as atheists and free thinkers.

2016

Registration Declined

The Registrar of Societies declined to register our society. We were informed that the application was rejected due to concerns that the registration might disrupt the “peace and good order” in the nation.

2016

Government Formally Registers Us

The Kenyan Government formally registers our society.
The registration certificate is issued on February 17, 2016.

2016

Government Suspends Registration

Attorney General Githu Muigai suspends the registration of the Atheists’ Society in Kenya following complaints from the clergy. The AG says the society would remain suspended until all the legal questions around the legitimacy of the group are addressed by the Supreme Court.

2019

Court Quashes Suspension

The High Court has overturns the deregistration of the society.

2022

Politician Petitions Court To Have Us Suspended

Former Juja Member of Parliament, Stephen Ndichu petitions the High Court to suspend the registration of Atheists In Kenya society.

2024

High Court Upholds The Rights Of Atheists

The High Court rules that compelling individuals to adhere to religious beliefs they do not support amounts to “theocratic tyranny,” which is prohibited by the Constitution.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi states that the Constitution guarantees freedom of belief and prohibits any form of coercion in religious matters, making it unconstitutional to impose religious ideologies on unwilling individuals.
