We condemn the revocation of Standard Media licenses

The Atheists In Kenya Society strongly condemns the recent decision by the Communications Authority of Kenya to revoke the broadcasting licenses of the Standard Group. This action represents a grave affront to press freedom and undermines the constitutional right to freedom of expression and access to information. A free press is essential in holding governments accountable and ensuring that citizens remain informed on matters of public concern. The Standard Group has simply exercised its journalistic duty by critically reporting on the Kenya Kwanza administration. Punishing them for this undermines the very essence of democracy.

This decision reflects a broader and troubling pattern of hostility toward dissenting voices in Kenya. We are witnessing a steady erosion of democratic principles and an alarming intolerance for criticism by this regime, which threatens the foundations of our nation’s democratic order. Kenya cannot claim democratic legitimacy while suppressing the voices of its journalists. A vibrant, independent press is the cornerstone of a free society.

We remind the government that freedom of the press is not a privilege granted at its discretion, but a fundamental right enshrined in our Constitution. Attempts to silence critical journalism weaken Kenya’s democratic fabric and betray the promise of transparency and accountability to the people. We call upon the Communications Authority to immediately reverse this decision and respect the independence of the media.

We further urge civil society, professional associations, and all Kenyans committed to democracy to stand in solidarity with the Standard Group and defend press freedom against authoritarian encroachment. Kenya cannot claim to be a democracy while muzzling the press.

A free media is the lifeblood of a free society.
