Our Statement on Compensation for Victims of Gen Z Protests

The Atheists in Kenya Society acknowledges the immense pain and suffering experienced by the families of those who lost their lives during the Gen Z protests. We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected and reaffirm that every life lost is a tragedy that deserves truth, justice, and accountability.

We oppose the notion that monetary compensation alone can serve as an adequate response to these killings. While financial support may help affected families cope with the economic consequences of their loss, it must never be used as a substitute for justice or as a means of closing the matter without accountability.

Those responsible for unlawful killings must be identified through independent investigations and held accountable in accordance with the law. The right to life is fundamental, and violations of that right cannot simply be resolved through financial settlements.

No amount of money can replace a human life. True justice requires truth, accountability, and meaningful reforms to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.

Our position is clear:

  • Justice, not payouts Victims of unlawful police brutality deserve justice through prosecutions, institutional reforms, and guarantees of non-repetition—not cash handouts.
  • Accountability of state actors – The government must hold security agencies accountable for excessive force and ensure that constitutional freedoms are respected.
  • Strengthening democracy –Civic participation should remain a voluntary, principled act of conscience, not one incentivized by compensation schemes.

We urge KNCHR and other stakeholders to redirect their focus toward systemic reforms, truth-telling, and accountability mechanisms that will strengthen Kenya’s democracy and protect all citizens—religious and non-religious alike—from abuse of power.

The Atheists In Kenya Society stands in solidarity with Gen Z and all Kenyans who continue to demand transparency, equality, and rational governance. Our struggle is for dignity and justice, not for payouts.
