The Atheists In Kenya Society (AIK) strongly condemns today’s remarks by President William Ruto directing that members of the AKORINO SECT be allocated 50 teaching positions in the next Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment.
Such statements are deeply troubling and fundamentally unconstitutional. The Constitution of Kenya clearly provides for equality and freedom from discrimination under Article 27, and explicitly prohibits preferential treatment based on religion, ethnicity, or belief. Public institutions, including the Teachers Service Commission, are mandated to operate on the principles of merit, fairness, transparency, and inclusivity—not religious favoritism.
Promising employment opportunities on the basis of religious affiliation undermines the rule of law, erodes public trust in state institutions, and sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the secular foundation of our republic. Kenya is not a theocratic state; it is a constitutional democracy that guarantees equal opportunity for all citizens regardless of their beliefs or lack thereof.
We urge all public officials to refrain from executing such unconstitutional directives.
Kenya has worked very hard to move away from such practices, and there is no justification for allowing them to re-emerge in key public agencies.
The Atheists in Kenya Society remains steadfast in defending the principles of secularism, equality, and the rule of law. Public offices must serve all Kenyans equally—not a select religious group.
